About this package

This package sets up automatic website backups sent to cloud storage you own, away from the server they protect, and on Business and Premium proves them with a real restore. It is for owners who assume their host keeps backups, or who installed a backup plugin a year ago and never checked it.

What gets backed up and where

Files and database are copied on a schedule to Google Drive, Dropbox, Amazon S3 or Backblaze B2, in an account in your name. On WordPress I usually use UpdraftPlus or a similar plugin; on other PHP sites, a server cron job with an off-site sync tool does the same job. A failed backup sends an email alert, because silent failures are how people discover they have no backup at the worst moment.

  • Retention is set so a hack noticed weeks late still leaves a clean copy: 14 days on Starter, 30 on Business and Premium.
  • On Business, mailboxes are included where the host allows it.
  • On Premium, busy stores get hourly database backups, archives are encrypted with a key you keep, and a second storage location protects against losing one account.

The restore test

A backup is only proven by restoring it. On Business I restore a full copy to a test location, confirm pages, logins and forms work, and write the steps down so you, or any developer, can repeat them under pressure. Premium adds a quarterly restore plan and server snapshots where your provider offers them.

Costs that stay with you

Storage beyond the free tiers, premium backup plugin licenses and provider snapshot fees are billed by those companies to you. Backups protect against loss, not attacks; if the site is already infected, the malware cleanup package comes first.

Questions about this package

Isn't my host's backup enough?

Treat it as a bonus, not your plan. Host backups often sit with the same provider, keep a short or unknown history, and some charge for restores. If the account is suspended or the host closes, they go with it. An off-site copy in your own storage avoids all of that.

How much storage will I need?

Roughly your site size multiplied by the copies kept, though incremental backups store only changes. A typical small business site fits comfortably in a free or low-cost tier. I check your site size first and tell you what to expect before choosing storage.

Can a backup be restored on a different host?

Yes. The archives are standard files and database dumps, not tied to your current host. That also makes them useful for moving hosts later, and the restore test on Business proves the archive is complete.
