Best Business to Start in Kashmir: 7 Ideas That Sell Online

Seven business ideas for Kashmir in 2026, checked against official J&K figures: GI saffron, crafts with QR labels, direct-booking stays, honey, digital services and more, with the risk and first step for each.

The best business to start in Kashmir sells something the valley does better than anywhere else, such as GI saffron, dry fruits, shawls or crafts, or a skill like software or design, to buyers outside the valley through a website and a marketplace. Ideas that depend only on tourists being here are riskier: visits to the Kashmir division fell from 35 lakh in 2024 to 11.2 lakh in 2025.

A good business idea for Kashmir has three things: a product or skill with a real Kashmir advantage, buyers who are not all in the valley, and a way to keep selling in a bad season. Below are seven ideas that meet those tests, with official J&K figures from the J&K Economic Survey 2025-26 and other sources read on 31 October 2026, the main risk of each, and the first step. They are ordered by how well they hold up when tourism drops, not by how much money they make, because nobody can honestly promise that.

Four-step workflow for choosing a business in Kashmir: find a Kashmir advantage, find buyers outside the valley, test the bad-season risk, then start small online

How do you choose the right business to start in Kashmir?

Work through four questions in order, and drop an idea at the first "no".

  1. Is there a Kashmir advantage? A GI tag, a climate, a craft skill or a place that buyers already associate with the valley. A generic product made in Kashmir competes with every factory in India.
  2. Are the buyers outside the valley? The local market is small and seasonal. Buyers in Delhi, Mumbai, the Gulf, Europe or the United States pay more and order all year.
  3. Does it survive a bad season? Check what happens if tourists stop coming for six months, or a harvest fails.
  4. Can you start small online? One product line, one website, one marketplace, before a shop or a factory.

Why should a Kashmir business not depend only on tourists?

Because tourist numbers can collapse in a single season. Official Tourism Department figures in the Economic Survey show visits to the Kashmir division rising from 31.6 lakh in 2023 to a record 35 lakh in 2024, then falling to 11.2 lakh in 2025, after the Pahalgam attack of 22 April 2025, the closure of 48 destinations that followed, and the monsoon floods.

YearKashmir division visitsAll J&K visits
202331.6 lakh2.12 crore
202435.0 lakh2.36 crore
202511.2 lakh1.78 crore

Tourism is still a good business in Kashmir. The lesson is to sell online to people who are not here: a hotel that also sells saffron gift boxes, or a tour operator with buyers booking a year ahead, recovers faster than one waiting at the gate.

Can you sell GI-certified saffron and dry fruits online?

This is the clearest Kashmir advantage. Kashmir Saffron has held a GI certificate since 1 May 2020, and J&K produced 19.58 tonnes of saffron in 2024-25, with exports of 17.82 tonnes worth ₹486 crore, according to figures given to the J&K Assembly. Walnut output was 3.11 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, and almond and walnut exports reached ₹602.53 crore, per the Economic Survey.

  • Why it works online: light, high value per gram, ships well, and buyers outside Kashmir pay for proven origin.
  • Main risk: fake "Kashmiri" saffron undercuts you, and harvests swing: 23.53 tonnes in 2023-24, 19.58 the next year.
  • First step: buy GI-tagged saffron through the trading center at Pampore, get FSSAI registration, and build product pages that show the GI label and the grade.

I built Saffron Star Kashmir, a saffron and saffron-coffee store that explains origin on every product page.

Why sell shawls and crafts with QR-coded GI labels abroad?

Kashmir has 18 GI crafts, including Pashmina, Kani shawls, Sozani, papier-mâché, walnut wood carving and Khatamband, and the government's QR-coded GI labels let a buyer check a piece on a phone. The Economic Survey counts 51,197 shawls and 19,686 carpets labeled so far.

  • Why it works online: buyers in Europe, the Gulf and North America want handmade work they can verify, and they will pay for it.
  • Main risk: handicraft exports fell from ₹1,162 crore in 2023-24 to ₹733.59 crore in 2024-25, so the old export-house route is weaker. Selling direct to buyers is the opening.
  • First step: get pieces tested and labeled, photograph them properly, and sell through your own site with international card payments. GST on handmade carpets, wood crafts and papier-mâché dropped from 12% to 5% on 22 September 2025, per the government, which helps the price.

Are homestays, houseboats and tours still worth starting?

Still a strong business, if bookings come direct and from far ahead. J&K had more than 16,500 registered homestay beds by 2025, and a new Homestay Policy with online registration on the Tourism portal was reported in October 2026. Most small operators depend on booking platforms and agents that take a cut and own the guest relationship.

  • Why it works online: a website with real photos, clear prices and a WhatsApp button turns repeat guests and referrals into direct bookings.
  • Main risk: the 2025 drop shows how fast demand can vanish. Keep fixed costs low and ask for a deposit.
  • First step: register with the Tourism Department, then a site with room or package pages and an inquiry form with dates and guest count.

My tour and travel website development page covers booking and deposits, and I built sites for Kohwan and other Kashmir tour operators.

Can honey, apples and orchard products sell online?

Kashmir grows most of the apples it is known for, with 21.10 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, half of J&K's horticulture area, and honey output rose 48% to 26,301 quintals in 2024-25, per the Economic Survey. Fresh apples are a wholesale business, but processed and packed products travel well.

  • Why it works online: honey, apple jams, dried apples and pickles are shelf-stable gifts with a Kashmir story.
  • Main risk: food labeling and testing. Buyers and marketplaces ask for FSSAI numbers and lab reports.
  • First step: FSSAI registration (basic now covers turnover up to ₹1.5 crore), simple lab tests, and a small store.

Why start a digital services business from Kashmir?

The idea with the lowest startup cost and the least dependence on the valley's seasons. A laptop and a stable connection let you sell web development, app development, design, video editing or AI chatbot setup to clients anywhere. This is the business I run from Baramulla: 13+ years and 900+ projects, mostly for companies in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and the Gulf.

  • Why it works: clients abroad pay in dollars, pounds or euros, and tourism, harvests and couriers do not touch it.
  • Main risk: slow first months while you build reviews, and internet outages. Keep a second connection.
  • First step: pick one narrow service, build two or three pieces of work a client can open, and start on a marketplace. My guides on getting a first freelance client and Fiverr vs Upwork walk through it.

Can you earn by taking Kashmir's own businesses online?

Thousands of small businesses in the valley are new to selling online. Mission YUVA reported 13,597 enterprises operational and 9,266 J&K storefronts onboarded to ONDC by September 2026, according to news reports of the scheme's figures. Each needs product photos, listings, a payment setup and someone to answer messages.

  • Why it works: local shops, clinics and schools want a website, a Google Business Profile and WhatsApp ordering, and prefer someone who speaks Kashmiri and can visit.
  • Main risk: small budgets per client. Package the service and charge monthly for upkeep.
  • First step: do three businesses in your own town well, and let them refer the next ones.

Is online teaching or Kashmir content a real business?

Teaching what you know to students anywhere, or building an audience around Kashmiri food, crafts, language or travel, needs little more than a phone and patience. Income comes from courses, coaching, sponsorships, or sending viewers to your own store.

  • Why it works: the diaspora and curious travelers form a global audience for Kashmir content.
  • Main risk: it takes months to earn anything. Pair it with one of the product ideas above so the audience has something to buy.
  • First step: one topic, one platform, a fixed weekly schedule.

How do the seven ideas compare?

Here they are side by side. The starting cost column is my rough judgment for a one-person start, not an official figure.

Mission YUVA, PMEGP and the J&K Startup Policy can fund the first stock or equipment. My step-by-step guide on how to start an online business in Kashmir covers registration, GST, payments and those schemes.

How can I help you start?

I build the online side of a Kashmir business: the store or booking site, Razorpay payments, product pages that prove origin, a Google Business Profile, and a WhatsApp or website AI chatbot that answers buyers when you cannot. I am based in Baramulla, I have built 16 live sites for Kashmir businesses, and you can meet me in Baramulla or Srinagar. See my web developer in Kashmir page for the work and the proof, and WhatsApp AI chatbot development if most of your buyers message before they pay.

What else do people ask about starting a business in Kashmir?

Which business is most profitable in Kashmir?

Nobody can name one honestly, because profit depends on your costs, supply and buyers. The ideas with the best margins tend to be the ones that sell a proven Kashmir product, such as GI saffron or labeled crafts, direct to buyers outside the valley, without a middleman.

What business can I start in Kashmir with low investment?

Digital services, taking local businesses online, and teaching or content need little more than a laptop or phone. Of the product ideas, honey and packaged orchard products start smallest.

Is tourism still a good business in Kashmir?

Yes, but plan for bad years. Visits to the Kashmir division fell to 11.2 lakh in 2025 from 35 lakh in 2024. Direct online bookings, deposits and a second income line make a tourism business safer.

Can I get a loan or subsidy to start a business in Kashmir?

Yes. Mission YUVA, launched in June 2025, offers capital subsidy and interest subvention, PMEGP covers projects up to ₹20 lakh for services and ₹50 lakh for manufacturing, and the J&K Startup Policy has a seed fund. The older New Central Sector Scheme closed to new registrations in September 2024.

Last reviewed: 31 October 2026. Figures come from the J&K Economic Survey 2025-26, the IP India GI registry, figures given to the J&K Assembly as reported in February 2026, and news reports of Mission YUVA data. Starting costs in the comparison table are my own judgment. This is general information, not financial advice.

Disclosure: I build websites and AI chatbots for Kashmir businesses and run a digital services business myself, so two of these ideas are close to my own work. I am CTO at ElySpace, a hosting company.
