What can a Canadian company hire me to build?
AI chatbots and agents first, then the software they plug into. Each line of work has its own page with the scope, the price model and the limits.
| Work | A typical Canadian project | Details |
|---|---|---|
| AI agents | An agent that reads support or sales requests, looks up the customer in your CRM and drafts the next step for staff to approve | AI agent development |
| Website and WhatsApp chatbots | A chatbot that answers in English, or in French from content you supply, and says when it does not know | AI chatbot development |
| SaaS and web apps | A customer portal or booking product with subscriptions billed in Canadian dollars | SaaS development |
| CRM and automation | A CRM shaped around your sales process, connected to your email and invoicing | CRM development |
| WHMCS | Provincial tax rules, .ca domain fields and custom modules for a hosting company | Hire a WHMCS developer |
When can we talk, given the time difference?
At the start of your day in Atlantic and Eastern Canada, and by written update everywhere else. India (UTC+5:30) does not change its clocks. Eastern Canada falls back on 1 November 2026, and British Columbia stopped changing its clocks in 2026.
| Your time | India, summer (Mar to Nov) | India, winter (Nov to Mar) |
|---|---|---|
| 9:00 Halifax | 17:30 | 18:30 |
| 9:00 Toronto or Montréal | 18:30 | 19:30 |
| 9:00 Calgary | 20:30 | 21:30 |
| 9:00 Vancouver | 21:30 | 21:30 |
In practice: one scheduled call a week in your morning, a written update every working day that is waiting when you start, and a release window agreed in the quote so nothing goes live while your team is asleep.
What tax and paperwork does a Canadian company need from me?
Less than for a contractor working in Canada. Two CRA rules matter, both summarized from CRA's own guidance; your accountant applies them to your situation.
- GST/HST. I am not registered, so my invoice carries none. A Canadian recipient of an imported service may have to self-assess it, unless the service is used exclusively in commercial activities, and HST provinces have a separate rule for the provincial part. CRA's simplified registration for foreign digital suppliers is aimed at consumers and unregistered buyers, not at a registered business hiring a developer.
- Regulation 105. The 15% withholding applies to fees for services rendered in Canada. CRA states that payments for services performed outside Canada are not subject to it, and my work is done entirely in India.
What you receive from me: a written quote, an invoice in US dollars per payment stage, and a clause assigning the custom code to your company on payment.
How do PIPEDA and Quebec's Law 25 shape the build?
You stay accountable for your customers' personal information while I process it, so the build and the paperwork both have to show where it goes.
- PIPEDA. The Privacy Commissioner treats a transfer to a processor abroad as a use, not a disclosure. You remain accountable, should get a comparable level of protection by contract, and should tell people their data may be processed outside Canada. A breach with a real risk of significant harm must be reported to the Commissioner and to the people affected.
- Quebec, section 17 of Law 25. Before personal information about Quebec residents is communicated outside Quebec, including to a service provider, you must do a privacy impact assessment and have a written agreement. I supply the facts your assessment needs: what data the system touches, where it is stored, and which AI provider sees what.
- Quebec, section 12.1. If an agent makes a decision about a person based exclusively on automated processing, the person must be told, and can ask what information was used. I design agents so a staff member approves decisions about people.
- Alberta. PIPA requires notifying the Commissioner of a breach with a real risk of significant harm.
The federal reform is still pending. Bill C-27, which held the CPPA and the AI and Data Act, died when Parliament was prorogued in January 2025. Bill C-36 was introduced on 15 June 2026 and had only a first reading as of 31 October 2026, so PIPEDA still applies.
Which rules apply to AI agents and automated messages?
There is no federal AI law in force, but three existing rules reach what agents and chatbots do.
| Rule | What it means for the build |
|---|---|
| CASL (anti-spam) | Automated email or messages need consent you can prove, sender identification and an unsubscribe honored within 10 business days. I store the consent record next to the contact. |
| Ontario job postings, from 1 January 2026 | Employers with 25 or more employees must say in a public job posting if AI screens, assesses or selects applicants. A hiring agent ships with that disclosure in the template. |
| AODA, Ontario | Businesses and non-profits with 50 or more employees must make public websites meet WCAG 2.0 level AA. Chat widgets and forms I build are keyboard-usable and labeled. |
| Charter of the French language | Commercial websites for Quebec must be in French on at least equal terms. The chatbot answers in French from French source content. |
Canada's national AI strategy, launched in June 2026, and the federal voluntary code on generative AI set expectations but not legal duties. My agents log what they did and why, which is what a buyer will be asked for if that changes.
Where is the system hosted, and how do Canadian customers pay?
In Canada if you need it, and through gateways Canadian customers already use.
- Data residency. AWS runs Canada Central and Calgary regions, Azure runs Canada Central in Toronto and Canada East in Quebec City, and Google Cloud runs Montréal and Toronto. I set the database, file storage and backups in the region your contracts name.
- Cards. Stripe is available to Canadian businesses and is built into WHMCS and most frameworks I use. Its Canadian list price for domestic cards is 2.9% plus CA$0.30.
- Bank payments. Pre-authorized debit through Stripe, or Interac e-Transfer requests through your bank, for customers who will not use a card.
- Payment page security. PCI DSS 4.0.1 requires control of scripts on payment pages, so checkout pages carry only the scripts they need.
What do Canadian hosting companies on WHMCS ask me for?
Tax rules by province, .ca domains and custom modules. WHMCS tax rules have two levels, which fits GST plus a provincial sales tax, or a single HST rate by province. A .ca registrant must meet CIRA's Canadian Presence Requirements, so the order form needs the registrant's legal type and acceptance of CIRA's agreement, mapped correctly to the registrar module. Scope and proof for this work are on my WHMCS developer page.
What North American work can you check?
Canadian clients are not named on this site. The nearest named work: Chargewise, a Next.js store for a company that ships smart 12V battery chargers across the United States and Canada, and CloudByteHost, WHMCS automation for a US hosting company. My US page covers that market, and the rest is in my portfolio.
When am I the wrong choice for you?
- Your contract requires the work to be done in Canada or by a Canadian resident.
- You need someone in your office, or on call through your night without a support agreement.
- You need French copy written, not only built. Bring a translator.
- You need a team of several developers at once. I am one person.
Disclosure: I am CTO at ElySpace, a freelance developer for Marmaids LLC, and founder of WHMCSPilot and MagizAI. Tax, privacy, language and accessibility points on this page summarize the Canada Revenue Agency, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, Quebec's Commission d'accès à l'information and Office québécois de la langue française, the Government of Ontario, the CRTC, the Parliament of Canada and the cloud and payment providers as read on 31 October 2026. They are not legal or tax advice.
Who this is for
- Canadian companies that want an AI chatbot or agent answering customers and staff from their own documents
- Founders who need a SaaS product or web app built, tested and handed over with the code in their name
- Businesses in Quebec or Ontario that need a build planned around Law 25, the French-language rules or AODA
- Canadian hosting companies on WHMCS that need .ca domains, provincial tax rules or a custom module
What is included
- A free scoping call of about 30 minutes in your morning or late afternoon, then a written scope and fixed quote within one business day
- A written agreement on how I handle your customers' personal information, ready for your Law 25 privacy impact assessment
- Hosting in a Canadian cloud region when your contracts or customers require it
- Model, cloud and WhatsApp accounts opened in your company's name, with keys you control
- A test set of your real customer questions, run before launch and after each release
- Code in your repository, deployment notes and two weeks of support after delivery
How the work runs
-
1
Scoping call
About 30 minutes on the problem, the systems involved, the provinces your customers live in and where data must stay. A written scope and fixed quote follow within one business day.
-
2
Quote and agreement
The quote lists what is built and left out, the price, the payment stages and who owns the code. If personal information is involved, a processing agreement goes with it.
-
3
Build on staging
I build on a staging copy, review every change myself and send a written update each working day, timed to land before your morning.
-
4
Pilot
A few of your staff use the chatbot, agent or system on real cases before customers see it, and we adjust answers and hand-off points.
-
5
Launch and handover
Production launch, the repository, notes and a walkthrough call, then two weeks of support.

Frequently asked questions
Do we pay GST or HST on your invoice?
My invoice from India carries no GST or HST, because I am not registered in Canada. CRA says a Canadian business that imports a service may have to self-assess the tax itself, unless it uses the service exclusively in its commercial activities. In a participating province the provincial part of the HST has its own self-assessment rule. Your accountant decides what applies to you.
Do we have to withhold 15% under Regulation 105?
Not for work done outside Canada. CRA's guidance says Regulation 105 withholding covers fees for services rendered in Canada, and that payments for services performed outside Canada are not subject to it. All of my work is done in India, and I do not travel to Canada for client projects.
What hours do you overlap with Toronto and Vancouver?
India is 9.5 hours ahead of Toronto in summer and 10.5 hours in winter, so a 9:00 call in Toronto is 18:30 or 19:30 for me. Halifax overlaps best. Vancouver stays on UTC-7 all year from 2026, so 9:00 there is always 21:30 in India. We fix a call slot in the quote, and written updates arrive before your day starts.
Can our data stay in Canada?
Yes. AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud all run regions in Canada, in Montréal, Toronto, Quebec City and Calgary, so the database, files and backups can stay there. I work on the servers remotely. AI model calls may still leave Canada unless the provider offers in-country processing for your plan, and I state that in the quote.
Can you build a French version of our website?
Yes, from French text your team or translator supplies. Quebec's Charter of the French language requires commercial websites aimed at Quebec to be available in French on terms at least as favorable as any other language. I build the bilingual structure, language switching and French metadata. I do not write or translate the French copy myself.
Can we pay through Upwork or Fiverr?
Yes. I take work through both, with Top Rated status and 600+ five-star reviews on Fiverr, and the work is the same as when you hire me directly. A direct contract is invoiced in US dollars. On a marketplace, its payment protection and dispute process apply instead of mine.
